Adults with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder help illuminate a dire need for effective housing

Canadian adults with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) experience compounding barriers to housing because of a systemic misunderstanding of the disability, resulting in a dire need for change. This is among the findings of a study that identifies successful pathways to housing for people with FASD and potentially other complex neurodevelopmental disabilities. The United Nations and Canadian government assert that people with disabilities have a right to housing choices and supports for safe living. In reality, they face multiple barriers, including unaffordability, staff turnover, limited personal autonomy and long waitlists. These issues are amplified for people with stigmatized and complex conditions, including FASD, contributing to cycles of adversity.
